Three Cedar Features You Can Have In Addition To Your Shake Roofing Installation

by For Content

If you are planning to have cedar shakes installed on your home, many other things can be done in addition to the roofing. You can also have shake siding installed, trim windows with cedar and other structural features, such as exposed rafter tails. If you want to have more of a warm wood look to your home with cedar lumber, here are three things that you may want to consider in addition to your new shake roofing:

1. Shake Siding Details On Your Home

Cedar shakes can be used as siding on your home in addition to the roofing. These materials can be the entire exterior finish if you plan to use siding.  You can also use shake siding for details like gables, porches and entrances on your home for a contrasting look with other materials like brick or even a cedar lap-siding material.  You can also combine shakes and lap siding to create different textures with the siding your have installed on your home.

2. Cedar Trim Around Doors And Windows

In addition to using shake siding, you can also use cedar lumber as trim around windows and doors of your home. You can see this common feature on many craftsman-style homes.  The wide window trim can also be combined with shakes, and you can even have the corners of the shake siding installed with a woven joint, which continuously wraps around corners rather than using corner trim.  The woven corner technique can be used to reduce the amount of trim and make the shakes to appear to wrap around the corners.

3. Architectural Features With Cedar Lumber

If you want to have more wood details for your home, you can also add architectural details with cedar lumber. This can be done with things like false rafter tails made from cedar materials. You can also have things like posts and brackets on porches made from cedar lumber.  Structural brackets can also be installed to give your home the aesthetic look of cedar and match all the other woodwork that you have had done to your home.  These brackets are for looks, and usually do not support any structural loads.

These are some of the things that you may want to consider having done in addition to your cedar shake roofing. If you need to have new cedar shake roofing or siding installed on your home, contact a roofing contractor that has experience installing shake roofs.
